The screen is made from 3-axis CNC milled cedar boards set in front of a 3’ x 12’ window. The boards are layed out with a spacing pattern that is echoed in the fencing and roof eaves, harmonizing the screen with other parts of the house. Cuts in the boards collectively resemble silhouetted branches of the Silver Maple tree in the backyard, reinforcing the importance of this tree to the overall design concept.

The screen faces South and protects a double height space inside the house from solar overheating. When hit with direct light, the screen casts shadows throughout the interior space.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/screen sketch july 2006.jpg" width="670" height="536" width_o="2048" height_o="1640" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/screen sketch july 2006_o.jpg" data-mid="8566978" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/IMG_6688.JPG" width="670" height="397" width_o="2048" height_o="1214" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/IMG_6688_o.JPG" data-mid="8562578" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/SCREEN DRAWINGS.jpg" width="670" height="563" width_o="2048" height_o="1723" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/SCREEN DRAWINGS_o.jpg" data-mid="8567157" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/model shot.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/model shot_o.jpg" data-mid="8566849" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/IMG_5156.JPG" width="670" height="1005" width_o="2048" height_o="3072" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/IMG_5156_o.JPG" data-mid="8562555" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/IMG_6617.JPG" width="670" height="446" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/IMG_6617_o.JPG" data-mid="8562575" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/screen night shot.jpg" width="670" height="859" width_o="2048" height_o="2628" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/screen night shot_o.jpg" data-mid="8562657" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/shadows.jpg" width="670" height="493" width_o="2048" height_o="1508" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/123742/1652966/shadows_o.jpg" data-mid="8566856" border="0" align="left"/>

The wall is a series of hinged boxes, suspended along steel cables. Shoe boxes fit into the hinged boxes, preventing them from collapsing and forming a consistent, gridded wall that when full is always the same.

As shoes are sold, however, the wall begins to collapse. Boxes collapse into each other forming infinite combinations of triangles and hexagons.

The full wall is rational, consistent, and stable. The process of commerce causes instability and unpredictable forms.

Formerly a hub for Brooklyn's maritime and commercial shipping activity, industry around the Gowanus Canal has shifted focus in the past decade. Buildings once housing tanneries, mills and gas refineries have been appropriated by lively and creative Brooklyners: artists, craftsmen, and designers whose work responds to a surging desire for locally produced, hand crafted goods. It is fitting that these new artisans are collecting around the canal - a piece of infrastructure that was built to enable commerce. And although the neighborhood's abundant manufacturing space and convenient location continue to serve this purpose, the canal itself has become an impediment to it.

The Gowanus at current is at the terminus of a series of dead end streets sandwiched between two vibrant neighborhoods -- Park Slope to the East, and Carroll Gardens to the West. Both neighborhoods are anchored by busy, North/South commercial streets: 5th and 7th avenues, Smith Street, and Court Street.

By establishing East/West connections through the Gowanus, we knit together the major thoroughfares of Park Slope and Carroll Gardens, bridging these two neighborhoods with new commercial spines. In addition to providing avenues for traffic and pedestrians, these bridges have densely layered program that reflects existing commercial streets but that is specific to the industrial nature of the Gowanus. They therefore act as carriers of the commercial fabric of the North/South spines through the manufacturing district around the canal. The result is a hybrid structure, designed specifically for 'Made in Brooklyn' commerce.

The bridge takes on multiple scales and meanings:
- Bridging neighborhoods through commercial streets while maintaining and fostering the growth of new local industries.
- Bridging different building types through row house transfiguration: embedding flexibility to adapt to new program and spatial needs over time.
- Bridging production and commerce; a manufacturing past and a commercial present.
- Bridging different landscapes; the city street above and the green pathway below that traces the canal's edge.

Brooklyners are proud of their brownstone-lined streets and the fruits of their creativity. A premium on "Made in Brooklyn" goods is a quickly growing trend. This proposal creates a unique urban condition that enables manufacturing and commerce to coexist. The result is a hybrid structure that both enlivens life around the canal and stitches together disparate neighborhoods, respecting its industrial past while envisioning a continually evolving future.

What is the role of the airport in contemporary Indian economic development? One of the central phenomena of India's growth has been the Special Economic Zone - essentially tax-free customs-free plots of land that multinational corporations use for a range of functions, from manufacturing, to management, to creating company towns. 195 SEZs currently exist in India and 300 more were planned until the Federal Government reacted to public protest on Feb 12, 2008 by banning the seizure of any new lands for SEZs.
We propose consolidating the space that would have been utilized for SEZs on our site. This collapses the typically disparate processes of manufacture, management, shipping, purchasing and travel to a single site, necessitating extreme density. Since airports and SEZs have mutually supportive infrastructural systems, we believe this program mix could support a super dense hub of business, shipping and travel activity.
To achieve this extreme density, our project engages the architectural tradition of the superstructure. Constant’s New Babylon, The Italian Futurists, The Japanese Metabolists, and the various superstructure proposals of the 1970’s, all utilize section and structural armature to generate new kinds of programmatic adjacency and urban density. We believe the programmatic complexity of the Special Economic Zone coupled with the massive pace of Indian development highlights a new potential for these projects in this particular context. We therefore utilize similar architectural strategies to engage a contemporary economic phenomenon, generating an entirely new typology – one that could be economically and environmentally productive, and experientially unique.
